When is the Best Time to Catch Mahi Mahi

Are you a mahi-mahi fan?  Actually there are two types of fans of this wonderful fish that’s part of the dolphin family: fans who like to eat it, and fans who like to catch and eat it.  If you’re kind of new to mahi-mahi and are into the idea of catching what you eat, here are some things you’ll want to know.

WHERE DO YOU FIND MAHI-MAHI?

Mahi-mahi, which are also called dolphinfish, can be found around the world in regions designated as tropical and subtropical.  In the United States, the Florida Keys are among the most popular places to catch this fish.  They typically are plentiful at depths of approximately 120 to 280 feet.  Their favorite food includes mackerel, squid, crustaceans and zooplankton.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO CATCH MAHI-MAHI?

Ideal fishing times vary a little from location to location.  In the Florida Keys, April through August is the prime season, although they also can be caught during the cooler months.  In Hawaii, anglers have good luck with mahi-mahi at various times throughout the year, with April, May and November commonly the most productive months.  March, June, October and December also are good months to catch mahi-mahi.

ARE YOU NEW TO THE FISHING EXPERIENCE?

In the continental United States, Florida is definitely a hot spot for fishing.  You can buy some gear and head out on your own, but many novice anglers (and those with experience, too) enjoy using one of the numerous charter fishing guides.  Florida-Guides.com provides a lengthy directory of professional fishing guides throughout the state of Florida.  If you’re after mahi-mahi, check out the link above for guides based in the Keys.  You’ll be amazed at how much you learn and the great fun you’ll have on every trip.
